Green Thursdays

These are Riley's new snack bags. They are cotton on the
outside and nylon on the inside

These are Riley's snack boxes. These work better for apple
slices as they are a little more waterproof. They are just half
gallon milk jugs that I cut the top off and cut 4 flaps and added
stick on Velcro.

This is a new series that I will be doing about going green with your family. We are going green not just because it is better for the environment but really because it is saving us money. Every week I will be posting a way that you can make a simple change in your house to become green.

Recycling is very PC but it's really expensive and unless you are actually buying everything made from recycled products, you are not doing the planet any favors. Really what we should be doing is reusing in our home. Reusing our bags and composting everything we can. So I am trying to find ways to reuse everything I possibly can.

A couple of weeks ago I ran out of ziploc snack bags and freaked out because all I had were gallon size . When we go out I pack lots of snacks for Riley and we go through so many baggies it's not even funny. I really have been wanting to stop buying them so when I ran out it forced me to get creative. The boxes are great and they are food safe and waterproof. I'm sure they won't last forever but we go through 2 or 3 milk cartons a week so we will always have plenty. The bags I made tonight and I'm really excited about using them tomorrow. They are big enough for a sandwich but small enough to fit in a smaller purse. I let Riley pick out the fabric today, so we have about 9 more to make. Then when they get dirty I just throw them in the wash. No more plastic snack bags. We were going through a box in like a little over a week, so it should save some money over time. I used a serger on the bags but you could use a regular sewing machine and top stitch on the outside. Let me know what you think. I know you'll like these Sue.

so as i was reading this - i thought to myself - i need some! i have been meaning to make some, too, just haven't gotten around to it. now that the weather is turning, i think i'll start thinking about it again! what is the nylon fabric on the inside? i have seen people use PUL, but i despise sewing that stuff! that's probably the real reason i have put it off.

and the boxes are a great idea, too!

I made the purple one with PUL but I put the shiny side on the outside because I didn't want it to touch the food. I got the nylon at Joann's.

Kara, My girls use these to take their sandwichs to school. I like that they can use it as a mat so that their food doesn't have to sit on the table... Wish i could sew! Great job........
